What If It's Working...Just Not Yet?
Can I coach you for a few minutes? I want you to think about the area of your life that's been frustrating you lately. You know the one. You've been praying about it.
Working on it.
Trying to make better decisions.
Showing up differently.
Maybe you've even done some healing. But if you're being honest, you're frustrated because you thought you'd be further along by now. Maybe it's your career.
Your finances.
Your business.
Your health.
Your marriage.
Your healing.
Your relationship with God.
Or maybe it's simply becoming the person you know you're capable of becoming. You've been putting in the work, but the results don't seem to match the effort. And when that happens long enough, a dangerous question can creep in: "Is any of this even working?"
I know that feeling. Sometimes we don't quit because we're incapable. We quit because we're tired of doing the work without seeing the evidence. But what if something is happening? What if you're measuring progress too early?
WHAT I'M LEARNING
We live in a world that loves visible results.
The promotion.
The weight loss.
The successful business.
The healed relationship.
The big opportunity.
The testimony.
But we rarely celebrate the invisible work that happened before any of those things became visible. And that's where most growth actually happens. Think about a seed. You can put it into the ground, water it, give it sunlight, and come back tomorrow to what appears to be...dirt. Come back the next day?
Still dirt.
A week later?
Maybe still dirt.
If you judged the seed only by what you could see above the ground, you might assume nothing was happening. But underneath the surface, something is developing. Roots are forming.
And here's what I want you to consider: Maybe you're in a root season.
You're learning discipline. You're developing boundaries. You're becoming more emotionally aware. You're learning how to communicate. You're rebuilding confidence. You're becoming more consistent.
You're changing how you respond to pressure.
You're learning how to trust God differently.
Nobody may applaud those things. There may not be a certificate for them. You probably can't post most of them on Instagram. But they're still growth.
"Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
— James 1:4
I've read that Scripture plenty of times, but there's one word that continues to challenge me:
Finish.
We want perseverance to start its work.
God wants it to finish.
And finishing requires staying with the process long enough for the process to change you.
Sometimes we're so focused on asking God to change our circumstances that we miss what He's developing in us while the circumstances are changing.
So let me coach you here:
Stop using visible results as the only evidence that you're growing.
Look at your responses.
Look at your discipline.
Look at your boundaries.
Look at what doesn't trigger you anymore.
Look at the conversations you're finally willing to have.
Look at the habits you're building.
Look at the things you used to tolerate that you no longer accept.
Look at the person you're becoming.
You might not be where you want to be.
But please don't disrespect your progress just because you're not finished yet.
What if the person you're becoming is part of the answer you've been praying for?
Don't rush past that.
Because sometimes the blessing isn't just getting the opportunity.
It's becoming someone who can handle it when it arrives.
REFLECT + RESPOND
- Where have I been telling myself “nothing is working” simply because I haven’t gotten the result I wanted yet?
- What has changed in me over the last year that I haven’t given myself enough credit for?
- Am I actually stuck or am I impatient with the pace of my progress?
THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE
(Look For The Roots)
Take 10 minutes this week and write down three areas:
THEN:
How did I handle this area of my life a year ago?
NOW:
What do I do differently today?
NEXT:
What do I need to keep practicing until it becomes part of who I am?
Don't measure yourself against somebody else's timeline.
And don't only measure progress by outcomes.
Measure it by capacity.
Measure it by character.
Measure it by consistency.
Measure it by emotional maturity.
Measure it by your willingness to keep showing up.
Then ask yourself:
"If I knew the work I'm doing today would eventually produce fruit, would I keep going?"
If the answer is yes...
Keep watering.
QUOTE TO CARRY
"Don't dig up what you planted just because you're frustrated that it hasn't grown fast enough."
WHAT ARE YOU READY TO CHANGE?
Maybe you've been struggling with confidence. Maybe you're navigating a major transition. Maybe you know what you need to do but can't seem to get yourself moving. Or maybe you're leading a team that needs a stronger culture of accountability, communication, and emotional resilience.
That's where coaching can help.
I offer 1:1 personal coaching and group coaching experiences for organizations and teams designed to help people build emotional resilience, gain clarity, strengthen leadership, and turn insight into action.
If you're ready to stop going in circles and start moving differently, let's talk.
I WANT TO BE YOUR NEXT SPEAKER
Whether I'm speaking to an organization, facilitating a workshop, or coaching someone through their personal development, my goal is the same:
Help people move from simply functioning to becoming mentally and emotionally healthier which results in better decision making and improved focus.
If your organization, school, ministry, or leadership team is looking for a speaker or facilitator around mental health, emotional intelligence, burnout prevention, resilience, self-worth, or leadership development, I'd love to have a conversation with you.
Always Remember...
You were made to thrive.
But thriving doesn't mean everything happens quickly.
Some things need time.
Some things need repetition.
Some things need healing.
Some things need discipline.
And some things simply need you to not quit yet.
So if you've been doing the work and wondering whether any of it matters...
Look for the roots.
You may be further along than you think.
Keep going.
With you on the journey,
– Nate
