Why Don't You Believe In You?
Can I coach you for a minute? I want you to think about something. Do you actually believe in yourself? Not the version of you that shows up on Instagram. Not the version of you that tells everybody else, "I'm good."
I'm talking about the person you are when nobody else is around. When you're sitting in your car thinking about that idea. When you're considering applying for the position. When you're thinking about starting the business. When you're wondering if you're ready for the next level. When you're looking at somebody else's success and quietly wondering:
"Could I really do that?"
Here's something I've been thinking about, just stick with me. I believe there are far more people walking around who think less of themselves than they should than there are people who genuinely believe in themselves.
And some of you reading this are included in that number. You have accomplished things you once prayed for. You've survived things you weren't sure you'd make it through. You've learned. You've grown. You've helped other people. You've shown up when you didn't feel like it. And yet somehow...
You still don't fully believe in you.
Why?
WHAT I'M LEARNING
I've learned that confidence isn't always about having a high opinion of yourself. Sometimes confidence is simply being willing to believe that God knew what He was doing when He created you.
That's different.
Because if your confidence is based entirely on your accomplishments, what happens when you fail? If it's based on people's approval, what happens when they don't clap? If it's based on comparison, what happens when somebody gets ahead of you?
You need something deeper than that.
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
— Psalm 139:14
Read that again.
"I know that full well." Not "I think so or I hope so."
"I know."
There is something powerful about knowing who you are. And I'm not talking about arrogance. I'm talking about agreement.
Agreement with what God says about you. Agreement that your life has value. Agreement that you have gifts. Agreement that you have something to contribute. Agreement that you don't have to become somebody else to be worthy of becoming who God created you to be.
And here's where I want to coach you:
Stop requiring external evidence before you give yourself internal permission.
You don't need everybody to believe in you before you start believing in yourself.
You don't need the perfect résumé or another degree, or another person to validate your calling. You don't need everyone to understand the vision and you definitely don't need to compare your beginning to somebody else's middle.
You need to start trusting the person God is developing in you.
Does that mean you'll always get it right? No. It means that when you fail, you don't make the failure your identity. When you get rejected, you don't make rejection your identity. When somebody doesn't choose you, you don't decide that means you're not worthy. When you make a mistake, you don't make the mistake evidence that you're a mistake.
You keep becoming.
That's what I want for you.
REFLECT + RESPOND
- Where in my life am I waiting for someone else to validate what I already know I can do?
- What have I accomplished that I haven’t given myself enough credit for?
- What would I attempt if I genuinely believed I was capable of doing it?
THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE
(The "I Believe in Me" Check-In)
I want you to take 10 minutes this week. Grab a piece of paper and finish these three sentences:
- I know I'm capable of... / Write down at least 5 things.
- I've already survived... / Write down the things you've made it through that once felt impossible.
- If I really believed in myself, I would... / Write the first things that come to mind. Then choose one.
One thing you've been avoiding. One thing you've been afraid to pursue. One thing you've been waiting for permission to do and take one step toward it. Not ten steps, just one step. Because confidence doesn't always come before action. Sometimes confidence is built through action.
The one day you realize, "Maybe I can do this." Then you do it again, and again. Until one day, you look back and realize...
I believe in me.
QUOTE TO CARRY
"You don't have to become someone else to become more confident. You have to become more convinced of who God created you to be."
WHAT ARE YOU READY TO CHANGE?
Maybe you've been struggling with confidence. Maybe you're navigating a major transition. Maybe you know what you need to do but can't seem to get yourself moving. Or maybe you're leading a team that needs a stronger culture of accountability, communication, and emotional resilience.
That's where coaching can help.
I offer 1:1 personal coaching and group coaching experiences for organizations and teams designed to help people build emotional resilience, gain clarity, strengthen leadership, and turn insight into action.
If you're ready to stop going in circles and start moving differently, let's talk.
YOU'VE FOUND YOUR NEXT SPEAKER
Whether I'm speaking to an organization, facilitating a workshop, or coaching someone through their personal development, my goal is the same:
Help people move from simply functioning to becoming mentally and emotionally healthier which results in better decision making and improved focus.
If your organization, school, ministry, or leadership team is looking for a speaker or facilitator around mental health, emotional intelligence, burnout prevention, resilience, self-worth, or leadership development, I'd love to have a conversation with you.
Always Remember...
You were made to thrive.
But thriving requires you to stop constantly negotiating with your worth.
You don't have to be the smartest person in the room. You don't have to be the most accomplished. You don't have to have everything figured out. You just have to be willing to believe that there is something in you worth developing.
So this week, I want you to talk to yourself differently. Give yourself some credit. Take yourself seriously. Stop shrinking when it's time to show up. And when that little voice starts telling you:
"Who do you think you are?"
I want you to answer:
"I'm still becoming. And I'm willing to find out what God put in me."
Now go act like you believe it.
With you on the journey,
– Nate
